Event-Misc: YOUNG KIRBY LAID TO REST IN ELMWOOD|Hundreds Attend Funeral and Pay Final Tribute to Charlotte Boy||The sharp staccato of three crackling volleys from the rifles of Fort Bragg riflemen, followed by the restful call of 'taps', signifying the end of a soldier's day, marked the end of the journey of Edward C. Kirby, 19-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey G. Kirby, as he was laid to rest in the Elmwood cemetery yesterday afternoon with military honors.| Mr. Kirby was drowned when the U. S. destroyer, 'Young', crashed into the rocks off Santa Barbara coast several days ago.| Headed by the Fifth Field Artillery band, playing mournful strains of Chopin's funeral march, the procession made its way to the cemetery, with sailors marching beside the hearse to the grave, going as far with their comrade as they could, to the very end of his journey.| Hundreds of Charlotte people, on foot and in cars, followed in the wake of the funeral as the soldiers and sailors trudged slowly along on their sorrowful mission, and tears stood in many eyes as the casket was lowered into the grave after a tender message by Rev. A. H. Porter.| Many floral offerings, indicating the love and esteem for young Kirby in his home city, were mute memorials to his honor and to the honor of a well-beloved son.| Rev. A. H. Porter, pastor of the Chadwick Memorial Baptist church officiated at the graveside.| The active pallbearers were from three recruiting branches of the United States service. These were: Sergeants McGee and Davis, of the naval recruiting station; Sergeants Schuster and Weckstrom, of the marine recruiting station; and Sergeants Twiford and Goesch, of the local army recruiting station.
